Are you becoming the villain in your own story?  – Karma Yoga chapter 1

Are you becoming the villain in your own story?

Not through fate or luck….

but through the invisible choices you repeat every day. One’s you think that doesn’t matter, It happens slowly.

Here, Karma yoga hits with the reality:

Your actions are not just creating consequences – They are creating you.

Every time you feed anger, laziness…

Every time you procrastinate over growth…

Every time you react without thinking…

You are building a version of yourself by every thought. Every choice you make contributes to this process. The habits you feed or repeat today become the next version of you. This next version could be either a hero or a villain…

The real question is – Are you building the hero version? or training villain without realizing it?

Karma Yoga makes you realize that:

Your destiny isn’t written by stars or fate – It’s by your character.

Your character is shaped by your actions…

All day. Everyday.

Karma and it’s Effect on character:

Karma is not cosmic punishment – character

We think karma as cosmic punishment – “results of our action”.

Vivekananda begins by defining karma as “work” or “action” in broadest sense i.e. Everything we do physically or mentally is karma and it leaves impressions on mind and soul.

Every action we do leaves a Mark (Samskara):

He explains that, Every action, thought and feeling we do is karma. Each experience we face leaves an impression on the southe sum of these impressions is what we called “character”. Everything we see in the world are simply the display of thoughts, caused by character and manufactured by karma.

A person who consistently acts with kindness and compassion will surely develop into a loving character, while who thinks selfishly will develop a self-centered character. Every tiny action shapes your character.

He gives beautiful example to understand it in better way- On the seashore, one wave is composed of millions and millions of small waves. Each small wave makes noise but we can’t hear it. when these become huge, we hear it. Thus, we think our tiny actions doesn’t affect much but it does.

Character is sculpted by both pleasure and pain:

Vivekananda Emphasizes truth that, Every experience you are going through now either it’s pleasure or pain both acts as a great sculptors. Think Your mind as the clay and your reactions as the design. Even he strongly stated, “misery teaches more than happiness”.

Remember – It is not what you experience, makes your character, But how you react to it makes.

If you repeatedly respond difficulties with courage – courage becomes your nature.

It is worth to remember, because;

If two people go through the same pain but one becomes wiser, One will stay in the same suffering loop. Here how you reacted decides character.

Character is not Hereditary:

To clarify it, He referred spiritual leaders like Buddha or Christ who has gigantic inspiring characters. They could not be obtained that inspiring character in one life just by theory of hereditary. Because we know who their fathers were….

A saint son is not saint; A criminal daughter is not criminal – character is not by genes but by karma (Every action, Every thought and Every feeling).

Focus on Action, not outcome:

The foundation idea of karma yoga: “Don’t Expect results; work for works sake”. He explains that, man works with various motives. Some want to get money, fame, power, family nobility, some want to get to heaven etc. He insisted ourselves to work for works sake. Some people work without selfishness. They do good because they just like doing good not with any ulterior motive to get fame or heaven.

According to Vivekananda, person who can say; he is karma yogi;

“My duty is only in the action. The results are not in my hands”

This helps the mind to think without fear, able to work with 100 percent effort. If you obsess about the results, then you will lose control of your mind. It creates unnecessary stress, fear of failure, comparison with others.

Practical learning’s in modern life:

  • Every tiny action matters

Choose one small action that reflects who you want to be;

Example: Hit gym five days a week.

  • Reaction is shaping your character

Repeat it daily — even when your mood disagrees;

(That’s when it’s most powerful.)

  • You become what you repeatedly do”

Stop judging yourself by intentions. Judge yourself by actions.

In Relationships: Chose patience you grow, chose anger you shrink.

  • Do Work for works sake; Focus on Action not the results;

At Work: Don’t work for credit. Don’t depend on results, Just learn – Even in failure.

Final Thoughts:

Before reading, I thought karma yoga is only a spiritual guide. After reading, I realized it’s a practical manual needed for everyone; who work hard, get hurt, fall, raise and attain peace.

It is still matters in 2025; We live in the most distracted generation.

Everything is result-focused: likes, views, packages, promotions.

To understand karma yoga better-  I’ll post remaining chapter wise posts as soon as I can. Surely you will love it.

If I want to describe chapter 1 in single line:

“Do your best work, with a steady mind, without letting results shake your inner peace.”
